Is A2261 a Fossil Galaxy Cluster in a Transitional Dynamical State?

چکیده

Abell 2261 (A2661) is a well-studied fossil cluster, but previous studies give contradictory results on its dynamical states, such as X-ray central entropy and magnitude gap. To improve our understanding of state, we conduct multi-object spectroscopic observations with Hectospec the MMT, covering an area out to 5 virial radii from cluster center, get improved completeness membership. Using this new data, calculate multiple indicators including gaussianity, distance offset, velocity offset. These suggest that A2261 moderately relaxed. However, Dressler-Shectman test reveals group candidate south, at projected near radius, overlaps tail-like feature. One galaxies associated would be sufficiently bright reduce This raises possibility could have recently transit in status, if had previously crossed only now found outside. In outskirts, see extended feature located opposite side candidate. On even larger scales, find connects, both sky space, long (~4.4Mpc) filamentary structure Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. support idea was fed into through filament, temporarily breaking resulting minor merger weakly disturbed intracluster medium cluster.

A dynamical fossil in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy

The nearby Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal (UMi dSph) is one of the most dark matter dominated galaxies known, with a central mass to light ratio M/L ∼ 70. Somewhat anomalously, it appears to contain morphological substructure in the form of a second peak in the stellar number density. It is often argued that this substructure must be transient because it could not survive for the > 10 Gyr age of t...

The Influence of Concentration and Dynamical State on Scatter in the Galaxy Cluster Mass-temperature Relation

Using a hydrodynamics plus N -body simulation of galaxy cluster formation within a large volume and mock Chandra X-ray observations, we study the form and evolution of the intrinsic scatter about the best-fit X-ray temperature-mass relation for clusters. We investigate the physical origin of the scatter by correlating it with quantities that are closely related to clusters’ formation and mergin...

The Dynamical State of Massive Galaxy Clusters

We study the mass distribution of a sample of 24 X-ray bright Abell clusters through weak gravitational lensing. This method is independent of the dynamical state of the galaxy cluster. Hence, by comparing dynamical and lensing mass estimators, we can access the dynamical state of these clusters. We have found that clusters with ICM temperatures above 8 keV show strong deviations from the relax...

A fossil record of galaxy encounters.

The cosmic infrared background (CIRB) is a record of a large fraction of the emission of light by stars and galaxies over time. The bulk of this emission has been resolved by the Infrared Space Observatory camera. The dominant contributors are bright starburst galaxies with redshift z approximately 0.8; that is, in the same redshift range as the active galactic nuclei responsible for the bulk o...

Intra-Cluster Medium Enrichment and the Dynamical State of Galaxy Clusters

The effects of cluster mergers on the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster gas in clusters of galaxies are reviewed. Mergers can influence the metal production as well as the gas ejection processes, which transport the gas from the galaxy potential wells into the intra-cluster gas. Several processes are discussed: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds and star formation activity. Simulations ...
